Sossusvlei in Namibia is noted throughout the world for its sand dunes which are no less than natural wonders. Situated in the Namib Naukluft Park and considered to be one of the most frequented sites, they are assumed to be the highest dunes in the whole world. Travelers to Namibia are unwilling to give the dunes a miss.
Sossusvlei comes to its own during dawn. The different positions of the Sun throughout the length of the day shower a whole new spectrum of colors over the dunes and make it picture perfect. Temperatures soar to an unbearable extreme as the day progresses and the tourists are advised against venturing out at this point of time. The region remains dry and desolate except on rare occasions when there is a heavy monsoon.
The Sesriem Canyon is the other popular site in the vicinity. The canyon initiates as an indiscernible chasm and then gradually broadens in the plains. Owing to its cloistered location and depth, it is capable of retaining water even during the scorching summer months.
Majority of the tourists opt for the Sossusvlei Wilderness Camp and Kuala Wilderness Camp as their chosen place of accommodation since they are close to the dunes and offers the tourist with the golden opportunity to witness the dunes at their very best that is during sunrise.
The roads closing in around the dunes are not in the best of conditions and are prone to accidents. Tourists have to be extra cautious while driving. An exciting way to traverse the Sossusvlei is a ride on a hot air balloon. It provides a bird's eye view of the entire region.
