Luderitz in Namibia is a small harbor town. The town is characterized by an unconventional sedentary outlook. It still bears the imprint of its German colonial history. Established in 1883 ,the town set on its path of development chiefly as a port known for fishing , trading and guano harvesting. However its fortune hit a jackpot when diamonds were discovered on the island in 1909.The town scaled new heights of prosperity .But this golden period did not last for long as it soon ran out of its resources. Luderitz was back to its erstwhile state. Perhaps the charm of the town lies in its antediluvian ways and the easy and laid back lifestyle of its inhabitants.
Though Luderitz is a port town, the shallow waters and rocky sea bed prevent ships from docking in the harbor. As a result the shipping industry of Namibia is mainly concentrated in Walvis Bay. The recent construction of a pier has ,however, enabled fishing vessels to anchor themselves at Luderitz. The town is all set to adorn a new look in an attempt to draw a large number of tourists .This would also have an impact on its economy.
Luderitz 's attracts tourists by virtue of its old world charm. The Goerke House on Diamond Hill is well worth a visit because of its intricate wood panelled and stain glass interiors .The other landmark is the Diaz Point which is a memorial dedicated to the discovery of the area by the Portuguese. The deserted Kolmanskop Ghost Town is a major attraction of Luderitz .The tourists also love to indulge themselves on a Luderitz boat cruise.
Luderitz can be a perfect getaway for one who is looking for a change from the hustle and bustle of modern life .
