Namib Desert of Namibia has a wide range of plant and animal species. One of the strangest species found in this desert is Welwitschia mirabilis. Welwitschia mirabilis is a type of shrub which has two long leaves. The leaves of Welwitschia endure throughout its whole life. The strap-shaped leaves of this plant sometimes get twisted by the onslaught of the desert winds. This plant persists in the highly arid circumstances in Namib Desert. Welwitschia mirabilis derives moisture from the fogs of coastal sea and this is how the plant survives the arid conditions. The desert also has several species of reptiles like Meroles cuneirostris, Ptenopus kochi, Rhoptropus bradfieldi, micropholidotus, etc. The Hartmann's zebras can be seen in the eastern part of this desert.
The Namib Desert has the highest sand dunes of the world. The large part of this desert is uninhabited. Namib is a place of significance for the mining of tungsten, diamonds and salt.
