Namibia Land and People


Located in Southern part of Africa and covering an area of approximately 825,418 square kilometers, Namibia is bordered by Angola, Botswana, South Africa and Zambia. The history of Namibia Land and People dates back to the ancient times.

The late 19th century marked the beginning of the colonization of Namibia people and land by Germany. This was followed by the discovery of diamonds which led to the coming of Europeans. Namibia fell under the control of South Africa during World War I. After continuous struggle for years and a bush war of about 25 years Namibia finally acquired its independence in 1990.

Characterized with a hot and dry climate with very little rainfall, Namibia consists mostly of plateaus. The coast is made up of the Namib Desert and in its east is the Kalahari Desert. 14% of the land of Namibia is protected including the whole of the Namib Desert region.

Namibia has a republican type of government and its capital is Windhoek. Majority of the people of Namibia are from Ovambo tribe. Namibia people follow Christianity. Besides they have their indigenous customs and traditions. Though English is the official language, Africaans is widely used. There also exist various tribal languages.
