The Republic of Namibia came to be formed after the country became an independent nation on March 21st, 1990. The current president of the Republic of Namibia is Hifikepunye Pohamba. Nahas Angula serves as the Prime Minister of the country. Covering an area of 828,418 square kilometers the Republic of Namibia has a long history that dates back to almost 2000 years.
Namibia came to be colonized by the Germans in 1884. The Germans during its rule devastated the land and killed a large number of people including many revolutionaries. During the First World War Namibia was seized by South Africa and in 1921 it went under the control of the League of Nations. When South Africa refused to recognize the authority of United Nations after the dissolution of the League of Nations, the South West African People's Organization (SWAPO) was formed in the year 1960. The efforts of SWAPO and a long term struggle for independence finally liberated the country from the hands of South Africa and it was declared a Republic in 1990.
The Namibian Republic has a population of about 2,004,147 with Windhoek as its capital city. The monetary unit of Namibia Republic is the Namibian Dollar. The Republic of Namibia has English as its official language. Other languages widely used in the Republic of Namibia are Afrikaans and German. Tribal languages are also used. Majority of the people of the Namibian Republic are tribal people. The major tribe is Ovambo.
The Republic of Namibia has a literacy rate of 84%, unemployment rate of 35% and an inflation rate of 2.7%. Abounding in diamond reserves and a large number of other natural resources, the Namibian republic has a well established communication and transport system. Thus it can be seen that the Republic of Namibia is fast developing.
