Namibia Flag


When Namibia acquired its independence on March 21st , 1990 and became a republic it adopted for itself a flag that became representative of the country's political set up and its culture. The design of Namibia flag was opted by a committee that was created to deal with the national symbols of the newly independent nation.

The flag of Namibia is rectangular in shape. The proportions of the Namibia flag is three is to two with respect to its length and breadth. Blue, red and green appear on Namibia national flag. Between the three main colors are narrow strips of white. On the top left corner in the blue section there is a sun which is golden in color. It has twelve rays which are straight. The diameter of the sun is one-third of the flag's width and its vertical axis one-fifth the distance from the hoist of the flag. Each of the rays from the sun is two-fifth is the radius of the sun and emerge from a blue ring that borders the sun.

The colors in the Namibia have symbolic meanings attached to it by the Chairman of National Symbols Sub-Committee of Namibia. Red highlights the chief resource of Namibia, the people of the country, their heroism and determination. White signifies peace as well as unity. Green stands for agricultural resources and the natural vegetation of Namibia. Blue emphasizes the color of the sky in Namibia, the azure waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Namibia's water resources and rain. The golden sun is a symbol of life and energy.

The colors of Namibia flag were selected from SWAPO flag. SWAPO which is South West African People's Organization had in its flag the colors, blue, red and green which are the most significant colors of the chief tribe of Namibia, the Ovambo tribe.
