Namibia People are the representatives of the culture and tradition of this African nation. The population density of Namibia is 2.46 people per square kilometer and it is the second most sparsely populated country in the world. The population of Namibians is approximately 2,030,000 and 84% of them is the black Africans. Recent Survey shows that about 44% of the population of Namibia is below 15 years of age whereas only 4% is above 65 years. The main occupations of the Namibia people consist of hunting, gathering, farming and herding. The urban people of Namibia comprise of traders, industrialists, professionals, and civil servants.
Some of the common tribes of the traditional Namibia culture are mentioned below:
- The Owambo - This is a common tribe of the northern Namibia. The Owambo comprises about half of the total population (45%) and presently they are around 700000. Initially in the 16th century this tribe belonged to the Bantu group but later they shifted southwards and settled in between the Okavango and Kunene rivers. These people basically dealt on fishing, hunting and gathering wild foods.
- The Damara - This is one of the oldest tribes of the country and their population is approximately 90,000. The Damara people of Namibia are the cultivators of corn and vegetables.
- The Kavango - This tribe has a population of 140,000 people. These people chiefly deals with horticulture and animal husbandry.
- The Herero - is also one of the oldest tribe of Africa and their population is about 100,000.These are mostly the pastoral cattle breeding people.
- The Nama - is one of the common tribe of Africa and their population is about 90,000 people.
- The Himba- is found in the Kunene region of the country and it is one of the ancient tribe of Africa. These are the toughest tribal race of this region as it has sustained its cultural heritage despite several foreign invasions.
- The Tswanas - is the smallest tribe of the country with a population of only 6,000 people.
- The Whites - are the European origin tribes of Namibia and has a population of about 75,000 people.
Most of the people of Namibia speak Afrikaans.
