Maputo Mozambique

A Port city on the Indian Ocean, Maputo Mozambique is the capital city of the country. Although the official population of the region is around 966,837, the real population is much higher due to the unofficial settlements. Maputo Mozambique is located at the mouth of the River Maputo which empties into the Southern end of the Maputo Bay.

Maputo was initially named Lourenço Marques after the Portuguese trader who had first come to the region. With the completion of the construction of a railroad to Pretoria the population of the region ascended considerably. Lourenço Marques became the capital of Mozambique in the year 1898 and after independence the name Lourenço Marques was replaced with the name Maputo.

Maputo Mozambique is the convergence point of a number of cultures. The South African influence is the strongest in the region but a major hint of Portuguese culture is also apparent. The aesthetic sense of the people of Maputo is reflected in the Associação Núcleo de Arte which is an important Center of Art. There are a number of places that one can visit in and from Maputo Mozambique. The most popular among them is Limpopo River Mouth.

Limpopo River Mouth

The Limpopo River runs through the South African- Zimbabwe border and finds its way through the South of the City of Xai Xai and finally merges with the Indian Ocean. The Mouth of the Limpopo River is an excellent tourist spot and it visited by many nature lovers. A number of rare and beautiful birds visit this region and is a perfect place to observe nature. There are at present a number of wood-and-thatched Lodges that can accommodate a good number of tourists who visit the region.
