Mozambique Government

The Mozambique Government is the Republican type headed by the President Armando Guebuza and Prime Minister Luisa Diogo. Both the President and the Prime Minister of Mozambique are the candidates of the Liberation Front of Mozambique (FRELIMO) party. The framework of the Mozambique Government is presidential representative democratic republic. The President of Mozambique holds the highest status in the Mozambique Government. He heads the State as well as the Mozambique Government and its multi-party system. The Mozambique Government exercises the executive power. The Mozambique Government in association with the Assembly of the Republic holds the responsibility of the legislative power in Mozambique.

Under the 1990 Mozambique Constitution, Mozambique is a multi-party democracy. The principal opposition party of FRELIMO party is the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO). The executive branch of the Mozambique Government is comprised of a president, prime minister, and Council of Ministers. For the effective administrative work, the control of power has been shared by a National Assembly and municipal assemblies. The Presidential and National Assembly Elections have been held in Mozambique since 1994. Since then these elections are being held every five years. The elected representatives serve for five-year terms.

In 1998, the first local elections were held in Mozambique. This election was meant to provide for local representation and some budgetary authority at the municipal level. Though RENAMO boycotted the election, candidates contested independently and won seats in municipal assemblies. Following the confusion in these local elections in 1998, the Mozambique Government took steps to rewrite the electoral law. The new law was passed by the consensus in December 1998. In the democratic setup of the elections any Mozambican citizen above 18 years of age can cast his/her vote to elect the representatives of the Mozambique Government.
