The Mozambique Constitution was approved and enacted on 2nd November in the year of 1990 fifteen years after the independence of Mozambique from the rule of Portugal. In 1990 the Mozambican people felt the need to exercise their un-forfeitable right to sovereignty. Out of their determination to consolidate the unity of the nation and respect the self-esteem of each Mozambican, the Mozambique Constitution was adopted and proclaimed. The Mozambique Constitution calls for the fundamental law for all political and social organizations in the Republic of Mozambique.
The fundamental rights and freedoms which have been penned down in the Mozambique Constitution speak of the struggle of the Mozambican people to put up a society of social justice. The equal rights of every Mozambican citizen and the rule of law have been underlined as the pillars of democracy. The wish of every Mozambican citizen has been determined as the most important commandment of the sovereignty of Mozambique. The responsibility and the pluralism of opinion have been welcomed from the Mozambican people in the Mozambique Constitution. The Constitution aims at strengthening the country's political system by organizing a democratic society.
Earlier on 25th June, 1975, the Central Committee of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) established the People's Republic of Mozambique. But this total process of proclaiming the complete independence of Mozambique was a solemn promise by FRELIMO. The then Mozambique Constitution acknowledged the role of FRELIMO as the true representative of the Mozambican citizens. The Mozambican people gradually felt that the Constitution was not recognizing the democracy by citizens. Henceforth, the need spruced up for the modification of the Mozambique Constitution.
