There is a group called the Polisario Front which is raging a struggle and movement for the separation of the Western Sahara from Morocco. The movement is also carried out by the Sahrawis, who demand that the region is a part of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. Most of the other countries of the world and the United Nations, consider this as an independent region under the Moroccan administrative system.
Spread over an area of 50,880 square kilometers, the population in the region is almost 1.5 lakh. The capital of the region is based at Dakhla, which is a coastal city. Dakhla was initially called as Villa Cisneros. There is one prefecture and one province in this region of Morocco. The names of the prefecture and the province are as follows:
- Province of Oued Ed Dahab
- Prefecture of Aousserd
