Monaco is an independent and sovereign state located in Europe.
Monaco shares excellent
foreign relations with United States of America and almost all countries of Western Europe. Monaco's diplomatic relations with USA have markedly improved in the last few years. Both of these countries are willing to maintain and even strengthen this relation between them. The USA does not posses any diplomatic charge against Monaco. Monaco became the member of the United Nations in the year 1993.
Monaco foreign relations further expanded as the Principality of Monaco became member of many other intergovernmental as well as international organizations like:
- UNESCO
- Interpol
- WHO
- IAEA
- The International Hydrographic Bureau
- Council of Europe
Monaco's foreign relations with France dates back to the treaty between the two sovereignties of 1918. This treaty signed by France and Monaco acquire the international recognition because the treaty is recognized by the 1919 Treaty of Versailles. Treaty of Versailles has brought a mutual legal agreement and common regime between France and Monaco. After that in the year 1945 and 1963 the foreign relations between France and Monaco have been further specified by a treaty and an agreement.
On December 15, 2006 Japan established diplomatic relations with Monaco but before that Japan only had a consular relation with Monaco. Even though the Principality of Monaco is not a member of the European Union it shares strong relation with the economic device of the EU. With the help of its customs union, Monaco also has become successful in maintaining good relations with France.
Nowadays the European nations of France and Italy have their permanent embassies in Monaco. On the other hand Monaco has its permanent embassies in the countries like France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Holy See, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States of America.
