The name Orhei originated from Orhei Vechi, which is a monastery close to the Ivancea village. In Romanian language the word "Orhei" means fortress. The other source informs that the name of the town was borrowed from the Hungarian word Orhely, which also means "fortress". Orhei was the primary center for the Jews before the Second World War.
