President of Moldova is the head of the state. The Parliament of Moldova which was previously known as the Supreme Soviet elects the
president of Moldova for a four year term. This election procedure was adopted in the year 1990. Later in 1991 a new provision was added to the procedure of presidential elections. In it was decided that the president would be chosen by a direct election, by the citizens of Moldova above the age of 18 years. Three people who had been selected for the post of the President of Moldova, after its independence were:
- Mircea Snegur became president in the year 1990 and continued to hold the post till the year 1996
- Petru Lucinschi became the president of Moldova in the year 1996 and worked till the year 2001
- Vladimir Voronin is the present president of Moldova and he became the president in the year 2001.
The president of Moldova is the head of the state and he shares executive power with the Council of Ministers.
The candidate who is going to be nominated for the post of the President of Moldova, he or she must be must be a resident of Moldova for at least ten years and over thirty five years old. The President of Moldova must be a speaker of the state language of Moldova.
The president of Moldova has numbers of duties to perform, like the president of Moldova nominates the prime minister as well as the members of the Council of Ministers. The president of Moldova takes part in the proceedings and debates of Parliament and he or she can even dissolve the Moldovan Parliament under certain conditions. The president of Moldova can conclude and negotiate international pacts with other countries. Moldovan President serves as the commander in chief of the armed forces of Moldova and he or she can also grant the political shelter as well as can create national referendums.
