Romania still cannot overlook the loss of a large part of their land after Moldova's independence. Language wise too, there is hardly any difference. In fact, Moldovan language is almost identical to Romanian. The official Romanian policy towards Moldova is quite interesting, it is called "one nation, two state" policy.
When we look back to the pages of history, we find that there was always a cultural and social disharmony between Moldova & Romania and this disharmony later on played a crucial role in this disturbed relationship between the two countries. Moldova & Romania had completely different histories altogether. Moldova was ruled by the Russian Empire and later by the Soviet Union. So there was always a difference in their attitudes towards the basic social and political issues.
But Romania, on the other hand, was the first country to recognize the independence of the Republic of Moldova. Within a few days after their independence, Romania signed the establishments of embassies and consulates. In addition to that, the two countries also signed treaties on visa and passport free transports. The Romanian universities also started providing scholarships for the Moldovan students. The independence of Moldova was officially more like liberation from Moscow's guardianship and a reunion with Romania. In spite of the initial problems, we can say with some conviction that the current political steps prove that both the countries now have a new approach of the relationship with each other.
