In survey results of 1991, it was seen that almost 78% of Moldavians worked for the state sector and in sharp contrast, the percentage of population employed in the private sector was only 3%. However, a third sector of employment was also seen in the collective farm sector which employed around 19% of the population.
The private sector intake witnessed a growth in the intake of Moldavians in 1995 when surveys showed that people engaged in the private sector was up to 9%. Agriculture has always been a dominant sector in providing a bulk of all Moldova jobs. In 1994, collective farms were transformed into joint-stock companies which contributed to providing employment to around 401,300 of the total Moldova population.
Free trade was established in 1995 and Moldova's industrial sector once again received a boost as foreign companies started investing in the country. People employed in Moldavian industries increased to 36% in 1995. A drastic development in the infrastructure of Moldova in the post-independence period gave rise to a surprising number of jobs in the country.
