There exists three levels of government in Micronesia namely, local, state and national. The Micronesian constitution endows certain power to the national, local and the state governments. The powers enjoyed by the Micronesia National Government are totally independent. Neither the state government nor the local government has the right to impose any kind of rules in the national power enjoyed by the Micronesia National Government.
The National Government of Micronesia has three branches namely, judicial, executive and legislative. The National Government of Micronesia enjoys an executive power, which is in total control of the President of Micronesia. The executive branch is accountable for proper execution of laws and carries out the services of the national government of Micronesia.
The legislative power lies with the Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia. It is a law making body comprising of fourteen senators. The senators are chosen from the four island states and are supposed to serve the nation for a time span of four years. There will be at least three justices to decide on an appeal. The President of Micronesia appoints the chief justice and other justices of the Supreme Court.
