The Federated States of Micronesia has built up ties with several nations. The
Micronesian foreign relation is extremely influenced by the decisions of the U.S. In 1991, it became an active member of the United Nation. In 1982, the government of the state had signed with U.S. the last version of the Compact of Free Association. In 1986, the island states of Micronesia became a sovereign nation.
After gaining independence, the FSM has built up diplomatic ties with a number of countries, mostly with the neighbors of the Pacific region. Building up regional cooperation through various organizations is one of the main aspects of
Micronesia foreign relations. The Compact offers help in various federal programs and also provide U.S. funds to the nation. The United States of America is responsible for the defense of the Federated States of Micronesia.
Renegotiations for the Compact treaty had already been started prior to its expiry in 2001.The foreign policy of Micronesia also include the diplomatic relation between Israel and United States. Though it achieved its independence from US in 1986, but still US has total control on its military troops.
