Micronesia Women constitute a significant part of the society of these island nation. Excluding some parts, the majority of Micronesian societies stresses on matrilineal descent. Traditionally, women form the links via whom titles, identity, property and land rights are assumed. Thus women of Micronesia have traditionally been regarded as the respected members of the society.
The traditional role of Micronesia women was however confined within the boundaries of home. The chief duties of the women of Micronesia centered around the family. Along with different domestic chores, Micronesia women were also associated with the production of subsistence crops, tending livestock, weaving, gathering shellfish and fishing.
The social position of Micronesia women changed during the advent of the market economy in the island nation. Recent times have seen the participation of women in the cash economy of Micronesia. Constituting almost 52% of the labor force, Micronesia women are shunning the confines of the home and becoming independent individuals.
The government of Micronesia is taking various steps to ensure the socio- economic development of the women of the country. Active participation in government and politics are also required for the betterment of conditions of Micronesia women. Some of the programs organized by the government for the women of Micronesia are Infertility Prevention Program, Rape Prevention and Education Grant Program, etc.
