Nan Madol is an ancient site of Pohnpei, Micronesia and has a unique architectural magnificence. Nan Madol is a ceremonial center and was a sight of human activity dating back to the first or second century AD. The city consists of numerous small artificial islands that are linked by a network of canals. The islet construction began in Nan Madol in 8th or 9th century and the megalithic architecture begun later at 12th or early 13th century.
Historical record of the city reveals that Nan Madol was a ceremonial and political seat of the Sau Deleur dynasty. The elite center of Nan Madol was occupied by the nobility and the population ranged to a maximum of 1000. The magnificent and architectural work of Nan Madol is the creation of the architects from the Lelu complex.
Currently Nan Madol is one of the popular tourist attractions and is a major archaeological district. The major attraction of Nan Madol is the royal mortuary islet of Nandauwas. The stone architecture stands with grandeur on a coral reef along the shore of Temwen Island and looks amazingly beautiful. In 1985 the ruins of Nan Madol was included in World Heritage Site and from that time it is serving as a National Historical Landmark.
