Various Stages of Education in Mauritius
Being a British colony formerly, the existing Mauritius educational system derived inspiration from the English system of education and learning to large extents. After gaining independence from British rule in 1968, Mauritius organized its educational system, following the British pattern of education. Hence, education in Mauritius is broadly categorized into three segments, namely the primary, secondary, tertiary and higher studies. However, for all levels of education, the official Mauritius language, English is the medium of instruction.
At the primary level, children can attend schools from the tender age of six, where they are automatically promoted from Classes I to IV on the basis of their performances. Standard IV is followed by a competitive streamline process, whereby the children are placed on Standards V and VI. Sixth standard is regarded as the final school year, after which examinations are held and successful students are awarded with Certificate of Primary Education (CPE).
Prior to 2001, the secondary school and college levels in Mauritius followed national ranking to admit students in secondary levels. Owing to the rise of severe disparities, this method was discarded and a fresh process was adopted by the government whereby, grading system formed the basis of admission in secondary educational institutions. This system is prevalent even today. Under this system, the students have to sit for two examinations and qualify in them, after which they can go for further studies.
In Mauritius, the tertiary level of education is characterized by studies in graduation and post graduation levels in universities. The Mauritius teenagers are free to choose their discipline and the place of study, owing to the presence of a number of reputed universities on the island. Some of the prominent institutions for higher studies in Mauritius include University of Mauritius (UoM), Mauritius College of the Air (MCA), Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI) and Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE).
