Due to its location, Mauritius climate is mainly tropical in nature. The seasonal changes are rather rare and the climate of Mauritius remains sunny and pleasant all 365 days. The southern hemisphere bears the island of Mauritius, which is located right above the Tropic of Capricorn. This is one of the major reasons why the climatic condition in Mauritius remains moderate round the year. Mauritius climate mainly consists of two seasons, summer and winter. Summer season stretches between the months of November and April, while between December and March, it is winter time.
In Mauritius, the average temperature during summer is 27º C while the winter months have an average temperature of 20º C. The two seasons of the island are commonly known by the names of austral summer and austral winter. Although the island is very small, there is a wide range of difference in the climatic condition of the central plateau regions and the coastal regions. Microclimates are an essential feature of Mauritius climate. Every year, the western and the northern regions of the island receive 2600 hours of sunshine on an average. The southern and the eastern regions are much more rainy and windy in comparison to the central region. Sometimes the temperature of the central regions drops to a minimum of 12º C during the night.
The months of November to April are the austral summer months. During this time, Mauritius experiences much hot and humid weather with the day-time temperature varying between 28º C to 35º C. The night temperature dwells mostly at 22º C. A lot of rains pour down during the months of February and March. The western and the northern parts of the island mostly remain sunny since rain is much less in these regions than other parts of the country. The cyclonic season starts from the middle of December and continues till March.
The austral winter season starts from the month of June and extends till September. The day-time temperature dwells around 24º C whereas the temperature at night becomes 17º C. The regions of the west and the north remain the most pleasant during the months of winter, since those areas are less windy. The wind, however, is the most favorable for the purpose of kite surfing and wind surfing. As compared to the European continent, the season of winter in Mauritius is much pleasant as the temperature lies between 22º C and 23º C.
