Dhar Tichitt is the name given to a cluster of villages, which were located alongside the edge of a limestone cliff. The Dhar Tichitt villages were located in the south central Mauritania between the 2000 and 800 BC. The society during that time had various strata and consisted of large villages surrounded by stone walls. This archaeological site of Dhar Tichitt is considered as a great tourist spot for people of all ages.
The rapid and intense excavations, which were done at Dhar Tichitt of Mauritania, provide lots of information about the quality of infrastructure, the living style of the people, their occupation and few such things. Moreover, this place being an archaeological site is of special importance to the historians as they can get bulk of information about the life in the ancient period.
Further excavations here throw light in the fact that the main occupation of the society living in Dhar Tichitt comprised of herding, hunting gathering. The various eminent excavators like S. Amblard, P. J. Munson and Augustin FC Holl have gathered the fact that seasonal farming of millets is no less popular even as early as 2000 BC. However, it all depended on the climatic conditions. Historical researches at Dhar Tichitt also tells us that even during such remote times the villages were created in a planned way and the life style was quite decent and stable.
