Mauritania festivals are celebrated all over the Islamic Republic. The festivals in the West African country include both religious festivals and secular celebrations.
The natives of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania trace their roots to a distinct Moorish ancestry. This historical characteristic has influenced the festivals in contemporary Mauritania. The Mauritania festivals betray a wonderful combination of both secular and religious ethos. The principal festivals of Mauritania include secular celebrations like Labor Day, New Year's Day, Independence Day and Africa Day. Religious festivals like Korite, Tabaski, Leilat-al-Meiraj and the Islamic New Year are also enjoyed with much fervor.
The Islamic Republic of Mauritania achieved independence on November 28 in 1960. The 25th day of the month of May is celebrated as an Africa Day. It was the day when the Organization of African Unity was founded. The African Economic Community or AEC is the present form of the organization. Korite is the Mauritanian version of the Islamic festival of Eid-ul-Fitr. The Tabaski festival is a variation of the Id-Al-Adha Islamic festival. Korite is a major religious festival and has an important religious significance. The festival marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. The devout gather in the local mosque before the commencement of celebrations.
