Mauritania Land and People provides a lot of information about the country of Mauritania. The country of Mauritania mostly comprises of low lying desert area of the Sahara. In the south west of Mauritania along the Senegal River the semi-arid land of Sahel is located and it consists of fertile alluvial soil. Through the middle of the country, a wide sandstone plateau runs from north to south. To the south east of the country the people can find a huge basin in the desert area called Hodh. For administrative purpose, the country is divided into 12 administrative divisions.
The population of the country of Mauritania consists of semi nomadic and nomadic people who are the descendant of Fulani, Arab, Berber and Tuareg. Apart from these, a large part of the population also belongs to the ethnic group of Bambara, Soninke, Tukolor and Wolof. The
Mauritania Land and People offers a great variety and diverse features to this country. The inhabitants of this country are largely Muslims. Hasaniya Arabic along with Wolof is the official language of this country.
Pular and Soninke languages are also used by many people in the country. The land and people of Mauritania has a great attractive force in drawing a large number of crowds from other parts of the world. The caste system here is not a very flexible one. The black Africans generally fall at the lower strata of the caste system. The country of Mauritania is in fact the last one to abolish slavery officially in the year 1980.
