Health Care is one of those sectors in the country which needs utmost care and attention. It is the duty of the government of a country to gift its people with best the best health care facilities. Health Care in Mauritania was not adequately developed till the late 80's.Though the government took measures in order to provide good Health Care in Mauritania; the effort was not enough to bring a drastic change in the Mauritania's Health Care.
There was lack of dispensaries, doctors, hospitals, other equipments frequently needed in the Health Care of Mauritania. There was only a central hospital in Nouakchott, twelve regional hospitals and various dispensaries strewn in different parts of the region. But the number was not enough in order to cater to the huge demands of the society. The ratio of number of beds and number of physicians were far less than the number of people.The infrastructure could not eradicate and heal number of epidemics that spread and took thousands of death during that time. There was hardly any hospital in the rural areas. People had to travel a long way in order to go for the medical check-up.
Things quite changed in during the fag end of the 90's where the expenditure on Mauritania's Health Care escalated to around 4.8% of the GDP. The year saw around 300 basic health units, 130 health posts and 50 health centers. Many private sectors in the health care have also come up. Thus the condition of Health care Of Mauritania has developed over the years but there are still scopes for improvement.
