Mauritania Regions



Mauritania Regions include twelve distinct divisions with one capital district. These regions in Mauritania are further divided into forty four departments. Each of the Mauritania Regions are provided with a Roman numeral by which they are identified in the reports. Before Mauritania's independence, these regions at Mauritania were better known as cercles. In 1900, Mauritania was an indigenous state. Later it became a French protectorate in 1903-05.

The twelve Mauritania Regions are listed as the Ardar region, Assaba region, Brakna region, Dakhlet region, Gorgol region, Guidimaka region, Hodh ech Chargui region, Hodh el Gharbi region, Inchiri region, Nouakchott region, Tagant region, Tiris Zemmour region and Trarza region. Among these regions of Mauritania, Nouakchott is a district.

The capitals of the above listed regions of Mauritania are Atar, Kiffa, Aleg, Nouadhibou, Kaedi, Selibaby, Nema, Aioun el Atrouss, Akjoujt, Nouakchott, Tidjikdja, Zouerayte and Rosso, respectively.

The Mauritania Regions are further distinguished into 44 departments namely Atar, Oujeft, Chinguetti, Aftout, Kiffa, Boumdeid, Kankossa, Guerou, Aleg, Bogue, Bababe, Magtar Lahjar, M'Bagne, Nouadhibou, Kaedi, Maghama, M'Bout, Monguel, Selibaby, Ould Yenge, Nema, Bassikounou, Oualata, Djigueni, Timbedra, Amourj, Kobenni, Ayoun el Atrous, Tintane, Kobenni, Tamchekket, Akjoujt, Nouakchott, Tichit, Moudjeria, Tisjikja, Fderick, Bir Moghrein, Zouerat, Keur Massene, Boutilimit, R'Kiz, Mederdra, Ouad Naga and Rosso.
