Hurricane Dean Hits Mexico (21 August 2007)

After creating havoc across the Caribbean and lashing Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Hurricane Dean has pushed into the Gulf of Mexico. The storm is currently headed towards Mexico again and is expected to hit the coast soon. Earlier Hurricane Dean caused devastation as it passed over the region killing at least 12 people in the Eastern Caribbean. The storm forced postponement of general elections in Jamaica where it caused substantial damage and claimed three lives in the south of the island. After crossing the Caribbean the hurricane hit Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula although not much damage was caused to the coastal resorts and the ancient Mayan ruins. Traditional Mayan Indian villages however bore the full brunt of the storm.

Hurricane Dean became a Category Five Hurricane, the highest level, when it hit landfall but weakened over the Gulf of Mexico. Offshore oil installations are however at the mercy of the storm which is predicted to strengthen to higher levels when it makes landfall again after crossing the Gulf.Mapsofworld also provides Allegiant Air airlines flights reservation online.
