Earthquake in China (March 21, 2008)


The Northwestern Chinese province of Xinjiang was hit by an earthquake of 7.2 magnitude on the Richter scale on Friday, March 21, 2008 at 6.33 a.m. (2233 GMT Thursday). The earthquake had its epicenter 22.9 km below the ground in a thinly populated area lying 140 miles southeast of the city of Hotan. Apart from a few houses collapsing, there were no reports of injuries or casualties so far from Chinese authorities. The Chinese Earthquake Administration reported four aftershocks of magnitudes varying between 5.0 and 5.2 on the Richter scale. The seismic activity, reported from the towns of Ahqan and Bostan, lying to the north of Kunlun mountains also did not result in any loss of life or damage.
