May 09, 2008 (0800 hrs GMT): As per the reports of the state media of Myanmar, the death toll has risen to 22,980. Unconfirmed reports say that the number of casualties may go upto 100,000.
May 07, 2008 (2000 hrs GMT): The South-East Asian country of Myanmar was hit by a devastating cyclone on May 2nd and 3rd. More than 22,000 people are reported to have died as a result of this natural calamity. The Myanmar cyclone, nicknamed Cyclone Nargis, also wreaked extensive damage to Yangon city. Disaster Areas The Myanmar Government has officially declared 5 regions: Ayeyarwady, Bago, Kayin, Mon, and Yangon as disaster areas. More than 75% of man-made structures like buildings were destroyed in these areas. Approximately 3 million people are believed to be rendered homeless. Humanitarian Aid and Assistance The ruling military government has appealed for international aid to mitigate the damage caused by the cyclone in Myanmar. The United Nations has already started preparations for sending much needed humanitarian aid to the poverty stricken country. The World Food Program has also pledged timely and relevant assistance. The Red Cross is preparing to dispatch medicines to Myanmar. The area damaged by Cyclone Nargis is interspersed by waterways and is inaccessible by standard surface transport even in the best of times. Relief is being sent to such remote areas in the form of airplane and helicopter drops. Food and medicinal aid are being sent to the more populous areas affected by the storm through vehicular transport. Neighboring countries like India, China, and Thailand have promised the Myanmar Government aid in terms of food, essential supplies, and tents.
