Benazir Bhutto assassinated

The hopes of Pakistan's return to democracy received a major setback with a shocking development which saw the country's former premier Benazir Bhutto being assassinated by a suicide bomber in Rawalpindi after addressing a large gathering of her supporters on thursday. She was fatally shot in the neck before the assassin blew himself up killing more than 20 other people on the scene. Mrs. Benazir Bhutto was instantly rushed to the Rawalpindi General Hospital in a heavily guarded vehicle where she was declared brought dead. Within hours of her death, former PM Nawaz Sharif arrived at the hospital to pay his last respects to the deceased leader before her mortal remains were flown away to Sukkur for performing the last rites. on Friday Afternoon, she was buried at Gari-Khuda Baksh in Sindh province alongside her father after a funeral procession marred by public chaos. Meanwhile, scenes of rioting and public outrage were witnessed in different parts of the country in reaction to the killing even as the world received the news in awe and disbelief. Immediately condolence messages started pouring in from different parts of the world which strongly condemned the brutal slaying of a charismatic political leader of global stature. US President George W. Bush said the perpetrators of this heinous crime “must be brought to justice” while praising the charismatic leader for her dynamism and determination to stand up against the extremist forces. Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf issued his condolences while stating that the same elements which threatened the fabric of the country were responsible for this dastardly act. Suspicions of a terrorist group being responsible for the act were confirmed when Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the dastardly act. Mrs. Benazir Bhutto was known for openly condemning extremist elements and had promised to wipe out terrorism from the face of Pakistan if she were elected for a third term in the upcoming elections. The assassination has apparently plunged the country in one of the worst political chaos in its history even as general elections are due to be held on the 8th of January, 2008.
