There is the presence in Malta of a well developed health care system provided by the government. Malta Health Service rendered by the government is free of cost for Maltese citizens and is funded through taxation. Besides, EU nationals are also entitled to free medical treatment that is offered by the government provided that they have with them European Health Insurance Card.
Malta Health Service provided by the government centers around the St. Luke's in Guardamangia which is the main general hospital. It is here that all major operations are conducted. In Gozo too there is the presence of a medical clinic. Besides, Malta Health Service has clinics scattered throughout, that are engaged in providing the people with quality treatment. A minimal charge is present for the medicines prescribed. However, people that come from low income groups are offered free service.
Apart from the basic medical treatment for small ailments, Malta health service also includes specialized treatment like immunization, dental services, speech therapy, Paediatrics clinics. Besides these specialized services that are offered to the people, paramedical services like nursing, physiotherapy,radiography, optometry are also offered by the health care units in Malta. For the overall development and well being of the people preventive medicinal checks in the form of immunization, baby clinics, glaucoma screening, weight check clinics.
Emergency treatment service is also offered to EU nationals if they possess the European Health Insurance Card. The presence of health care units that are both private and public in nature has ensured the presence in Malta of a good health care system.
