Malta stock exchange is a mutual association that facilitates traders and stock brokers and assist them to trade securities and trade company stocks. By the end of 1992 the Malta Stock Exchange Act led to the opening of the stock exchange. A Council, controlled by the Chairman took the responsibility to manage the functions of the exchange. The primary duty of this Council is to approve the applications for listing. Apart from this it also supervises performance of the in-progress obligations of listed organizations. On the basis of the EU standards prospectus and listing requirements are being done over here.
In 2001 the Malta stock exchange experienced the introduction of remote trading along with the relocation of new premises. As a result the trading floor went away and stockbrokers started to trade directly from their respective offices, ensuring their clients to offer a better service. There was an extensive growth in the primary listings of Collective Investment Funds, whereas the secondary listings raised up steadily all through the year. On the other hand, the number of licensed stockbrokers rose from 15 up to 20 along with the other four financial intermediaries.
In 2001 the stock exchange in Malta secured associate membership of the Federation of European Securities Exchanges. By the end of 2004, fourteen equity listings along with the twenty-seven corporate bonds and Maltese Government stocks listed on the Exchange.
Moreover in 2005 the Maltese stock exchange faced a more improved trading level, and an approximate rise of 63% in the market index. The Malta stock exchange is also known as Borza Ta' Malta.
