World Heritage Sites in Mali
The three World Heritage Sites in the country are:
- Timbuktu
Timbuktu in Mali is one of the three major tourist destinations. The land, during the 13th century was considered as the pride of the country as it was the main trading centre for gold and salt. But from the end of the 16th century it started to decline. However, Timbuktu is still considered as the most visited sites in Mali.
- Bandiagara
Bandiagara in Mali is the village inhabited by the Dogons. The 200 km spread village has a typical traditional construction. Bandiagara is built in a unique shape of a human figure with the head turned towards the north. The traditional mask dance is considered as another major attraction in the country.
- Djenne
Djenne, from the beginning of the 13th century has been the distribution centre for goods like corn and rice. The city is also popular for its richness in art, religion and education. The mosque located at the centre of the city is one of the major attractions of Djenne in Mali.
There are several other tourist destinations located in different parts of the country, among which these three have been selected as World Heritage Sites Mali.
