The Mali trains are operated every 8 or 9 days from Dakar to Mali and vice-versa. The trains for Mali departs from a place named Gare de Hann that is 3 kilometers away from Dakar Station. The Dakar-Bamako 'Express' train is locally called 'Mistral International'. It was earlier known as the Mali Express. The Dakar-Bamako train comprises of 4-berth compartments, 1st and 2nd class seats and also a bar and restaurant. One can have snacks and drinks while onboard. The distance between Dakar and Bamako is 1,230 kilometers.
At each border post between the countries, Mali and Senegal, travelers have to get their passports stamped. A railway official might collect the passport and for getting the passport back, one has to visit the police office at the border. The fare from Dakar to Bamako varies from 25,500 CFA or US$38 to 52,000 CFA or US$81 depending on the class of seat. Children below the age of 3 years, travel for free. However, 3-9 years old children have to pay half the fare.
