Tessalit is a city in the Kidal Region of Mali. It is the capital city of the Cercle of Mali with the same name. Tessalit is one of the most desired oases for the trans-Saharan tourists. The location of Tessalit is near the Algerian border in the north of Mali. Tessalit is situated amidst the mountain chain of Adrar des Ifoghas and coordinates the latitudes and longitudes of 1° 00' 54" East and 20° 12' 00.05" North respectively. Tessalit stands 493 meters above the sea level.
The city of Tessalit is an industrial belt. The city's economy flourishes due to the gypsum deposit mining and a plaster factory. These industries have been strong support to the economy of Mali. Inspite of the few hindrances like Tuareg Rebellion and terrorism threats in neighboring Algeria, the economy of the region has been stable throughout.
The majority population of Tessalit belongs to the Tuareg ethnic group of Mali. Tessalit includes communes of Tadjodjamet, Taghlit, Awil, Terist, Abanco, Tadjnut, Telakak, Ubankort, and many more.
Entertainment in Tessalit is marked by the recent development of the musical band called the Tuareg Blues. It is one of the most popular musical bands of the country and draw audience with their unique performances. The panoramic natural views of the city form the main attraction of Tessalit.
