Lake Debo of the Inland is an inland drainage basin of the River Niger, created due to the sudden loss of gradient by the river and resulting in the construction of a plaited lakes, streams and marshes. Inland Lake Debo is also known as the Inner Niger Delta and locally it is known by the fond name of the Macina. Situated in the Niger's middle course, Lake Debo of the Inland lays betwixt the forked Bani, which is a tributary and the main channel of Niger. Sevare, Mopti, and Djenne are the man cities of the 400 km-long region.
The wet season, finds the swamp inundating into a lake and naturally irrigating the land. But it is in the dry season that the Macina shows up fine network of channels and lakes. The inland delta is also a provider of fish and fresh water for the Dogon and Fulani people living there and growing pearl millet, rice and rearing cattle.
Lake Debo of the Inland in the Sahel region of the southern Sahara is easily reachable from the major cities of Mali by bus from Bamako to Gao or Mopti, which are the two towns standing on the two ends of the delta.
