Gao, the capital city of Gao region in Mali is located on the banks of river Niger. The city is located in the geographical coordinates of 16.26 N and -0.05 W .The altitude of Gao is 226 meters above sea level. As the capital of the Songhai Empire, Gao was an important center of trade and learning and culturally resembles the cities of Timbuktu and Djenne.
Gao in Mali was founded in the 7th century and Kanda was the first monarch. He was the founder of the Za dynasty, which later on became the Songhai Empire. Gao was annexed to the Mali Empire in 1325, but Ali Golon re-established the Songhai rule. Gao was largely destroyed by Moroccon invasion in 1591. It was a small town during the French rule but expanded its port.

The population of Gao is a mix of several ethnic groups like the Bozos, Fulanis, Tuareg and the Bambara. Bozos were nomadic river dwellers, the Fulanis were cattle herders, Tuareg were nomads and Bambara held from western Mali. The native language of Gao is Songhay. It is the tomb of Askia Mohammed, an emperor contributing to the expansion of the Songhaii Empire. It is a typical example of the vernacular architecture, built in mud, a style followed in West Africa. It includes a pyramidal tomb, two mosques and a cemetery. There is a museum devoted to Sahel. Tourists can enjoy the night market in the city. La Dune Rose is a spectacular sand dune named after its appearance in dawn and nightfall.
There is an international airport at Gao. It receives many domestic and international flights, connecting Gao to other major destinations of the world. Well paved roads allow this city to be easily accessible on land. Ferry service along the river Niger connects Gao to Timbuktu and other cities. Several small villages like Bakal, fringe the outskirts of Gao. Tarachart, Chembe, Lobou, Sidibe, Soria, Tinel, Guintou and Koima are the nearby cities and towns surrounding Gao.
