Africa comprises several tribes that inhabit the continent since pre-historic times. Mali tribe includes several clans that make up Mali society. The tribes of Mali are predominantly settled along the banks of the river Niger. Of all Mali tribes approximately 10% are nomadic and the remaining are engaged in primary economic activities like farming, and mining.
The Dogon, Bambara, Fulani, Bobo, Bozo, and Tuareg comprise the prominent Mali tribes.
The Dogon Tribe of Mali
The Dogons are a pagan group located primarily in the districts of Bandiagara and Douentza. The Dogon population is concentrated along a stretch of embankment of Bandiagara Cliffs near Timbuktu, which is close to the Sahara Desert in West Africa. The cliffs provide an excellent shelter for 700 Dogon villages. This place of their habitation has been declared UN World Heritage site due to the Dogon's unique social and cultural lifestyle
The main occupation of the Dogons is farming. The Fete des Masques held in April is an important Dogon festival. Colorful wooden masks carved by the Dogon are worn by the men during this festival.
Barbara tribe of Mali
Barbara is the largest ethnic group holding the top most positions in government and commercial organizations. The Bambaras are mainly residents of Bamako, the country capital. They speak Bambara, which is also the most commonly used language throughout Mali.
Fulanai Mali Tribe
The Fulani of Mali or the Fulfulde or Peul almost have 850,000 to 1,000,000 people in their tribe. The Fulani tribe is the largest nomadic community in the world scattered in six nations of West Africa. In Northwest and Central Africa, almost fourteen million Fulani are settled. The Fulanis spread over a radial distance of approximately 150 km from the city of Mofti. The urban Fulani are usually commercial tradesmen, while the rural men are nomadic drovers.
Tuareg Mali Tribe
The Tuareg tribe are more commonly called the 'blue men of the desert, which is derived from their attire of indigo robes and turbans. They are an ancient migratory group still known for their pure desert existence. They are famous for their martial arts and artistry work. The Tuareg tribe with their camel-caravans inhabits the desert regions of Mali.
