Mali People


Mali is an African country where majority of the people belong to the Muslim religion. Almost 95% of the total population of the country is Muslim and the rest include Christians and people from other religions. Located in the western Africa among the Sahara desert, Mali offers fascinating landscapes, impressive artworks and amazing people.

The inhabitants of Mali belong to different ethnic groups and tribes such as:
  • Dogon people of Mali
    The Dogon group of people mainly lives in Bandiagara and Douentza, the administrative districts of Mali. Nearly 700 villages are located in these regions that are inhabited by the Dogon. Dogons are industrious farmers and are also well-known for making fascinating wooden masks.

  • Tuareg Tribe of Mali
    Tuareg is an ancient nomadic tribe mainly known for their incredible ability of fighting and artwork. The tribe travels through the desert with their camel-caravans.

  • Fulani Tribe of Mali
    The Fulani tribe, also known as Fulfulde or Peul, is the major tribe living in the country. The Futa Jalon is a subgroup of the tribe. The majority of the Fulani population of Mali belongs to this subgroup. Mopti is the region where they live.
The people of Mali, belonging to different tribes and ethnic groups speak 32 different languages. Although French is the official language of the country, most of the people in Mali use the Bambara as their mother tongue.
