The people of the country depend mostly on these resources to earn money. Mali fishermen play an important role in the economic development of the country.

Mali Fishing Locations

Fishing is done in large scale in Mali. The Niger River and its tributaries play a crucial role for the Mali fishermen, as these water bodies are the homes to the fishes. The delta, in the Mopti region in Mali is often flooded by the Niger and Bani rivers, during the rainy season, which makes it an ideal location for fishing. Another important location for fishing is the Senegal River.

There are several techniques that the fishermen use while catching fishes. The Mali fishermen use harpoons, nets and snares to catch fish. The nets are used for catching large number of fishes in less time. That is why this method is mostly followed by the fishermen of Mali.

Nearly 90% of the fishes caught by fishermen are dried or smoked. Some of these catches are kept for domestic use and some are exported. The two main species of fish found in Mali are the North African catfish and the tilapia from the Nile.

The droughts of 1968 to 1974 and of 1982 to 1985 had a lasting affect on river fishing in Mali.
