The study of Mali art and craft reveals various facts about Mali culture. The people of Mali are extremely creative and they create not only for living, but also for enjoyment. During the 14th century and onwards, Mali had been the hub of culture and education in Western Africa. The art and craft of the country had also made huge impact on the contemporary art of Europe.

The various forms of artifacts in Mali include wood or brass carving, jewelries, wicker products and fabric designs.
  • Mali woodcarving is considered as one of the most important art forms of the country. Mali is famous for making outstanding wooden masks, which they use during several rituals. The stylized wooden sculptures have distinct features. The Dogons are well known for curving masks, doors and mud constructions.

  • The colorful and patterned textiles are the specialty of Mali textiles. Mali is famous for making tie-dyed textiles, which are made widely throughout the country. Hand painted cloths; mud cloths and indigo cloths are some other forms of textiles found in Mali.

  • The several tribal communities and ethnic groups of Mali have distinctive architectural features, which are clearly visible through the different shapes of construction and the materials used for making it.

  • Mali women as well as men love wearing jewelries as much as they enjoy making them. Most of the community people of Mali prefer gold jewelries. The Tauregs on the contrast prefer silver jewelries. Wool, silk, beads, clay and stones are used for making jewelries.
Mali music and dance has a significant position in Mali culture. Drums, flutes, strings and other instruments are used for creating original Mali music. Most of the occasions in Mali are celebrated with music and dance.
