The Mali Prime Minister is the Head of the Government. He is appointed by the President who in turn is democratically elected by the people of Mali. The Mali Prime Minister is responsible for controlling the day to day administration of the Government. The constitution of Mali is based on democracy. Elections are held in Mali and the leader of the party gaining overall majority is elected as the President. The President then appoints the Prime Minister of Mali. In recent years, some important executive powers have also been transferred to the Prime Minister by the President. Ousmane Issoufi Maiga has been serving as the Prime Minister of Mali since April 29, 2004.
The present Mali Prime Minister Issoufi Maiga has a rich educational background. He has also held important ministerial posts. He was born in 1945 near Gao, Mali. He studied economics at the University of Kiev, Ukraine, graduating with a degree in banking and finance. After his graduation he had worked for World Bank. He was also the Assistant Director of Autonomous Debt Financing Fund under the French Ministry of Finance.
As a successful Minister he was instrumental in hosting African Nations Cup, after he took over as the Minister for Youth and Sports of Mali. President Amadou Toumani Toure took over as the President of Mali. He appointed Ahmed Mohamed ag Hamani as the Prime Minister. Issoufi Maiga then joined as a Finance Minister. As a finance minister he was able to prove his mettle, in improving Malian economy. After a cabinet reshuffle he became Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure in October 16, 2002. On April 29, 2004 he took over as the new Prime Minister of Mali.
