Mali President

Mali President is democratically elected by the people and is both the Head of State and the Head of Government. Konare was a prominent president of Mali. He was elected as the President in May 1997. As a President he got international praise for his efforts in reviving the unstable economy of Mali. His foreign investment plans helped in making Mali the second largest cotton producer in Africa.

June 2002 Amadou Toumani Toure was elected as the President of Mali. He was a very popular public figure. In 2007 elections Toure enjoyed a landslide victory claiming more than 68.3% of the votes.

Amadou Toumani Toure was born on November 4, 1948, in Mopti. He attended a school in Bamako in order to become a teacher. Eventually he joined the army and attended the Kita Inter-Military College. After numerous training courses he rose to the rank of commander of the parachute commandos in 1984. He became the leader of the Transitional Committee for the Welfare of the People.

Amadou Toumani Toure played a significant role in arranging the national conference which formulated the Constitution of Mali. In June 2001 he became the special envoy of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. After retiring from the army, he wanted to pursue his political career by becoming an independent candidate in the presidential election. Being an independent candidate his government has members from all the political parties. Toure is now running a second term after being re-elected in April 2007 Presidential elections.
