There are four main Mali rivers, the Niger, Senegal, Bakaye and Bafing. The Niger and Senegal are the longest rivers in Mali. The Bakaye River is called the 'White River' of West Africa. The river flows from Guinea and Mali. In the Kayes Region, Bakaye merges with Bafing River, which is also called 'Black River' and together they form the Senegal River in Bafoulabe.
Niger
Niger River is the most important river in Mali. Niger River arches alongside the Sahara and ultimately turns south to meet the Gulf of Guinea. Apart from Mali, River Niger also flows through Nigeria. Mali is located at the northern part of the River. Niger forms a vast delta in Mali before turning towards the Gulf of Guinea.
The importance of River Niger in the economy of Mali deserves special attention. Niger River creates a wetland near south of the Sahara Desert, which otherwise has an arid environment. Niger River is the chief source of subsistence, fishing and drinking water and irrigation in Mali. The coastal region along the Niger is very fertile and is perfect for the growth of crops. Hence the river is very important for the agricultural growth of the country. Niger River also serves as a major navigational route. There are important harbors along the Niger. Niger is thus an integral part of the commerce of the country.
Mali is blessed by the presence of the rivers. If it had not been for the presence of Niger, Senegal, Bakaye and Bafing rivers, Mali would have been an arid land. The water from these rivers is the life-saver in this West African country.
