Mali Flag is the symbolic representation of the country. The equal vertical stripes of the tricolor Flag of Mali represent the pan-African colors, namely green, gold and red. The ratio of the length and breath of Malian flag is 2:3. The Flag of Mali was formally adopted on March 1, 1961.
Prior to 1961, the flag of Mali had a human stick figure with raised arms on the golden strip in the middle of the flag. The Muslim beliefs of the country lead to the removal of the original Mali flag as it was against the Islamic beliefs. Islam recognizes aniconism meaning the absence representation of human figure and opposes the pictorial depiction of human figure. Due to religious objections the original flag was banished. This incident took place when Mali got its independence in 1961 from France and Senegal. The style of the flag is acquired from the French Tricolor, which are of green, yellow and red colors.
