The office of the Maldives President was constituted on November 11 1968 with the establishment of the Second Republic in Maldives. The President executes the tasks assigned to him as per the laws laid down in the Constitution of the country.
The office of the President of Maldives is divided into several sections and various tasks are allotted to each of these. The most important section is perhaps the Cabinet Division which oversees and assesses the execution of its various directives. The Cabinet Division is involved in the coordination of its activities and also aids the cabinet in technical and secretarial matters. There is a Political Affairs Division which monitors the development of various political reforms and is also responsible for aiding the President in fulfilling his responsibilities. Then there is the Public Service Division which is responsible for the proper functioning of various ministries of the government, devising their mandates and dealing with the various issues of government employees .The President Protocol Division functions in other words as the President's Secretariat .Other section include the Press and Publication Section, the Public Relations Section, Budget and Property Management Section, Corporate Management Services Section.
The Constitution ordains that the President be elected for a period of five years. The President can also be re-elected. The Majlis or the legislature is assigned the task of electing a President which is then subjected to formalization through a majority referendum.
At present Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is the President of the Republican State of Maldives. He was elected in 2003 and his agenda includes fortifying the role of the legislature, the various democratic institutions and protection of human right amongst others.
