Shopping in Maldives is something that the visitors on the island cannot miss. Maldives shopping includes shopping for various local artifacts, handicrafts like the ones made of shells, perfumes, clothing, cosmetics, electronic gadgets, accessories and edible items such as canned fish.
The two areas which are known as the prime shopping zones in the capital city of Male are the Chaandanee Mugu and the Majeedhee Magu respectively. Chaandanee Magu is the ideal place to be in if one is looking for some traditional handicrafts .The shops in this market are filled with gift items, handicrafts and curios. Local items such as the beautiful miniature dhonis made of wood is definitely worth been part of someone’s personal collection. A mat made out of local fibers and called the 'thudu kina' is a must buy.
The Majeedhee Magu is another important market and has several shops selling every conceivable good. The shops boast of a good collection of garments, handicrafts, ornaments, bags and electrical equipments among other things. Except for 15 minutes of closure for offering prayers, the market remains open till about 11 in the night.
Apart from these two shopping areas there is also a local market which deals in fresh vegetables and fruits and other non- vegetarian food items.
Duty Free Shopping Maldives
Duty Free Shopping Maldives is limited to the international airport only. The departure terminal of the international airport at the city capital Male is authorized as a duty free shopping zone. The lounge at the terminal has shops which sell cameras, watches, accessories, electrical equipments, tobacco jewelry and a few other things.
