The main Malawi railway line runs between Salima to Nsanje and has a length of 439 kilometers. This railway system is run by the Malawi Railways. In the year 1977 the line was further extended to Lilongwe and following this again it was extended to Mchinji. This Malawi rail line connects with the steamer service of Lake Malawi at Chipoka. The steamer service here is also operated by Malawi Railways. Malawi Railway began to function as a private sector from the year 1999.
Malawi Railway is the main body that is responsible for railway transport system in Malawi. The primary railway routes in Malawi connect Mchinji, Lilongwe, Salima, Limbe, Blantyre, and Nsanje.
Even though the Malawi rail transport is slower than the road transport system it is preferred by the people. The development of Malawi rail has benefited the country in myriad ways. The transport of raw materials and other industrial goods has been facilitated by Malawi Rail. Also, foreign trade including both import and export had received a boost with Malawi Rail.
