Mount Mulanje

Mount Mulanje is a must visit spot for all the tourists who come to Malawi. The place is in southern part of Malawi. The place is also famous by its local name. It is called "Mulanje Massif" by the local people. Mount Mulanje is actually a large monadnock near the city of Blantyre. The monadnocks are isolated hills or small mountains rose abruptly from a gentle slope or a leveled surrounding plane. This monadnock called Mount Mulanje is a pretty big one. Approximately it measures 22x26 kilometers. The highest point of Mount Mulanje is Sapitwa Peak. The place is well known for its stunningly beautiful landscapes and well maintained paths and huts. It is an ideal place for trekking and mountain biking.

An ideal trekking area must have certain qualities. Mount Mulanje possesses all of them. The mountain here suddenly rises from the waving plane to the highlands. A major portion of the Mount Mulanje is covered by the rolling grassland which rises nearly up to eighteen thousand meters to twenty two hundred meters. This Mount Mulanje was formed after a magma extrusion around one hundred and thirty million years ago. The other rocks surrounding the place were worn away by the natural forces. But the igneous rock of the Mount Mulanje was left intact. The entire area is now covered with deep forest and depending on this huge stock of wood here, the timber industry of the country depends on Mount Mulanje.

The place is also full of different species of birds and butterflies. Some rare birds like Cholo Alethe and White winged Apalis are found here. This makes Mount Mulanje a favorite bird watch as well.
